TfL long-term funding deal needed now

Sadiq Khan and TSSA Activists protest over cuts to TfL funding at Tower Bridge

TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has demanded the Government come up with "proper long-term funding" for London transport networks.

The comments come after Ministers announced an extension to emergency funding for Transport for London (TfL) which would keep services running until the middle of May, having seen a major downturn in usage over the course of the Covid crisis.

Manuel Cortes said:

"Our union has been in talks with the Government for some time about the future funding of TfL and another short-term deal just doesn’t cut the mustard.

"Millions of Londoners need to know now that proper long-term funding for our capital city's transport networks is going to be in place. London’s transport network is a vital piece of infrastructure, not just for the city but for the wider British economy.

"There may be elections on the horizon, but no one should be playing politics with this. We have a pandemic to recover from and Tories really need to stop dragging their heels and give TfL the long-term financial stability needed to move out of the shadow of the pandemic."
