TSSA calls for immediate General Election following Sunak's appointment
TSSA General Secretary, Manuel Cortes, has called on the Conservative Party to announce a General Election following the news that Rishi Sunak is to become Britain’s third Tory Prime Minister this year.
Union leader Cortes said Sunak's premiership is “completely untenable”, following his election to leader of the Conservative Party after the resignation of rival Liz Truss last week, whom he failed to beat in a leadership election in September.
Cortes said a General Election must be called immediately.
Commenting, Cortes said: “For the Conservative Party it has been the year of the three emperors, and Britain has had enough of Tory civil war and incompetence.
“Sunak is now the head of a Party he cannot unite and of a nation in crisis following his predecessor’s disastrous stint in number ten. His position is completely untenable and undemocratic without an immediate General Election to ratify it.
“Only a few weeks ago, Sunak failed to get the backing of his own Party’s members. Now he comes into Downing Street without a mandate from them, let alone from the public.
“We need a change of government, a Labour government, not simply the shuffling of the pack to produce another new Tory Prime Minister.”
