Pickets and strike action
Strike action will be taken on 18 and 20 August 2022 by members in: Avanti West Coast, c2c, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway, LNER and Southeastern and Network Rail General Grades (Bands 5-8) and Controllers.
Industrial action short of strike will be taken by members in: West Midlands Trains, Northern, Greater Anglia, Southeastern and TransPennine Express.
Members can picket their own workplace. Please follow guidance on picketing.

- c2c: do not attend work between 00:01 and 23:59 on Thursday 18 August and between 00:01 and 23:59 on Saturday 20 August
- CrossCountry: do not attend work between 00:01 and 23:59 on Thursday 18 August and between 00:01 and 23:59 on Saturday 20 August
- East Midlands Railway: do not attend work between 00:01 and 23:59 on Thursday 18 August and between 00:01 and 23:59 on Saturday 20 August
- Great Western Railway: do not attend work between 00:01 and 23:59 on Thursday 18 August and between 00:01 and 23:59 on Saturday 20 August
- LNER: do not attend work between 00:01 and 23:59 on Thursday 18 August and between 00:01 and 23:59 on Saturday 20 August
- Southeastern: do not attend work between 00:01 and 23:59 on Thursday 18 August and between 00:01 and 23:59 on Saturday 20 August. In addition, we are asking you to ALSO take action short of strike from 18 August. Check the details of ASOS.
- For Network Rail General Grades 5-8 and Controllers: do not commence work between: 02:01 on Thursday 18th August to 01:59 on Friday 19th August and 02:01 on Saturday 20th August to 01:59 on Sunday 21st August. Do not start a shift between these times. If your shift starts before the strike action, but finishes during the strike action, then complete your shift.
Action short of strike called
TSSA has called industrial action short of a strike in several train operating companies.
The specific types of industrial action short of strike (ASOS) vary slightly across different companies. Please check what action is allowed and advised at your company from the list below.
TransPenine Express (TPE)
The action short of strike will be discontinuous and will take place on the intended dates, set out below and on such further dates as will be notified in due course.
From 00:01 on Tuesday 9th August 2022 to 23:59 on Wednesday 7th September 2022.
Types of industrial action short of a strike:
- Overtime ban
- Refusal to work rest days
- Ban on non-rostered staff working weekends and nights
- Ban on undertaking contingency duties arising from industrial action
- No mentoring of colleagues including new starters
- No training of colleagues including new starters
- No double desking (no carrying out work of absent colleagues and vacancies)
- Ban on on-call activities including ban on covering vacant on-call lines
- Ban on out of hours work communication
Northern Rail
The action short of strike action will be discontinuous and will take place on the intended dates, set out below and on such further dates as will be notified in due course.
From 16:00 on Wednesday 17 August 2022 to 08:00 on Monday 22 August 2022.
The types of industrial action short of a strike are:
- Overtime ban
- Call-out ban
- Ban on undertaking contingency duties arising from industrial action
- Ban on non-rostered staff working weekends and nights
- Ban on out of hours work communication
West Midlands Trains
The action short of strike action will be discontinuous and will take place on the intended dates, set out below and on such further dates as will be notified in due course.
From 00:01 on 18 August 2022 to 23:59 on 20 August 2022.
The types of industrial action short of a strike are:
- Ban on unpaid overtime
- Ban on paid overtime
- Ban on on-call activities
- Ban on activities associated with voluntary contingency cover.
Greater Anglia
The action short of strike action will be discontinuous and will take place on the intended dates, set out below and on such further dates as will be notified in due course.
From 00:01 on 18 August to 23:59 on 20 August.
The types of industrial action short of a strike are:
- Ban on paid and unpaid overtime
- Ban on on-call activities
- Refusal to work rest days and un-rostered Sundays
- Work only to pre-agreed rosters
- No mentoring or training of colleagues including new starters
- Refusal to support technological online ticket issues
- Ban on voluntary contingency cover and all associated activities
- No covering of duties and tasks of other roles/grades
- Work to rule, including refusing lone working where it goes against company policies and procedures
- Ban on cross-cover and working at other locations that are NOT your home station
Southeastern:
The action short of strike will be continuous and will start from 18 August and will continue until further notice.
From 00:01 18 August until further notice.
The types of industrial action short of a strike are:
- Call-out ban
- Ban on undertaking contingency duties arising from industrial action
- Ban on non-rostered staff working weekends and nights
- Ban on out of hours work communication
