After the announcement by the Labour Government, the Passenger Railway Services (Public Ownership) Act 2024 was passed into legislation allowing the Government to resume control of national rail services once privatised contracts expired. As of June 2026, half of the UK’s rail services are now controlled and organised by DfT Operator Limited, a state-owned holding company.
